Narendra Modi's
hygiene drive in India has an interesting historical precedent. Mid nineteenth
century Naples was notoriously filthy, causing Mark Twain to quip: "See
Naples and die".
Remind anyone of
India today?
As it turns out King
Umberto and his queen Margherita came to the rescue and inititated a cleanup in
the 1880s. The cleanup was successful and paved the way for Neapolitan pizza to
spread to the whole world.
