Naples and Pizza

Narendra Modi's hygiene drive in India has an interesting historical precedent. Mid nineteenth century Naples was notoriously filthy, causing Mark Twain to quip: "See Naples and die".

As it turns out King Umberto and his queen Margherita came to the rescue and inititated a cleanup in the 1880s. The cleanup was successful and paved the way for Neapolitan pizza to spread to the whole world.
